There are 15 recognized subspecies of Silver Pheasants. They are found in mainland Southeast Asia and eastern and southern China. They have been introduced to Hawaii. The wide range of 'Length:' above for the male has to do with the many subspecies.

They are sexually dimorphic with the males mostly having white upperparts with some black edging (amount varies between subspecies), black underparts, scarlet wattles, and a long crest. Females are mostly reddish brown or dark brown sometimes with white marking on the underparts.

Diet includes bamboo seeds, small snakes, termites, figs, forest yams acorns, ripe fruits, and various plants.
