The White-necked Jacobin is also known as the Great Jacobin and the Collared Hummingbird. They are found from Mexico south to Peru, Bolivia and south Brazil. They are sexually dimorphic. The male has a bright blue head and chest, white belly and tail, and the rest of the upperparts are green. The tail is edged and tipped black. The female plumage varies with the predominate plumage being a blue-green breast that is scaled with white, white belly, green upperparts, and the tail is mostly green with a dark blue tip.

Diet is nectar from flowers from trees and shrubs. Small insects are also eaten.
