The Double-crested Cormorant is widely distributed across North American. It is also the cormorant I see the most of in the S.F. Bay Area. They orange-yellow area around the bill is very distinctive. Their bill is thin and serrated. Since their feathers are not waterproof, they need to spend a lot of time drying them by spreading them open. One of the best places to see them do this is at Lake Merritt where they breed.
