The White-shouldered Tanager is found from Honduras south to Ecuador and southern Brazil. They are sexually dimorphic. The male is glossy black with a distinctive white shoulder patch and white underwing coverts. The female has a grayish-yellow head and the rest of the body is yellowish.

Diet includes insects and some fruit.
