The Brazilian Tanager is endemic to Brazil and is found along the eastern coast of the country. The male has a red body and head with black wings and tail. Females upperparts are brownish-gray with the underparts mostly a light red. Both have bills with the lower mandible expanded at the base.

Diet includes fruit, seeds and insects.
