The Short-eared Owl belongs to the family Asio which are known as the eared owls. That is, they have tufts of feathers resembling mammalian ears. They are found throughout North America, South America, Europe, Asia and less in Africa. They breed in the far north and winter in the south. The Short-eared Owl hunts both day and night. They primarily eat shrews, moles, rabbits, mice, pocket gophers, etc.
