Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay, CA

Bodega Bay is always a great place to bird. It is especially notable for shorebirds, raptors, and of course gulls abound. There are quite a few places in this small town to bird and after you are done, there are a lot of great seafood restaurants. Some of my favorite places are:

When you first enter Doran Beach, check out the beach facing the Bay. When the tide is going out, it is very good for shorebirds, and geese (Brandt's during the winter). I have also seen Harriers sitting on the old poles. You can continue around to the point and see loons and grebes and then walk along the ocean side.
To get to "The Hole in the Head" you drive down West Side Road. There are quite a few places where you can stop along the way and see shorebirds, ducks (including mergansers), Black Oystercatchers, loons and grebes. The Hole in the Head is at the point where the road sharply turns to the right. You go straight. The Hole in the Head was excavated for a Nuclear power plant and is now a fenced-in deep pond where you can see a variety of ducks and some songbirds. There is also a small beach facing the Bay. At low tide you can walk around it.
If you continue around the corner you will end up at "The Head". This is always a popular place. The ocean views are spectacular. Double-crested cormorants and gulls nest on the rocks. People also come here for whale watching.
