The Red-throated Pipit breeds in northern Europe, Asia and northern Alaska. They winter in sub-Saharan Africa and south and East Asia During the breeding season their reddish throat identifies these birds. During non-breeding season, the barred back helps to differentiate them from American Pipits.

Diet is mostly insects which they get by foraging on the ground. They also eat some seeds.
